Aaron Z. Sauder, 75, of 195 School Rd., Leola, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, after a two year illness. He was the husband of Lydia M. Horning Sauder. They were married for 54 years in December. Born in East Earl, he was a son of the late Eli N. and Lena Zimmerman Sauder. Aaron was a welder at Horning's Machine & Welding, Leola. He was a member of the Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference), Leola.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 26, at Clearview Mennonite Church near Versailles with Ministers Daniel Newswanger, Michael Martin, Jason Nolt and Raymond Stauffer officiating. The family will receive friends at their home from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 25. Burial will be in the Clearview Cemetery.

SHIPSHEWANA - Jayden LaWayne Schlabach, 8 months, of Shipshewana, died at 12:26 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2012, at the scene of a truck-buggy accident at the intersection of 675 W. and S.R. 120, Shipshewana.
He was born Nov. 26, 2011, in Topeka, to Loren Jay and Eva (Slabach) Schlabach.
Survivors in addition to his parents are two sisters, Darla JoAnn and Nicole Faith Schlabach, both at home; grandparents Edward Jr. (Mattie) Slabach of Shipshewana and Wilbur (Marilyn) Schlabach of LaGrange; and great-grandparents Melvin (Ida Mae) Schlabach of LaGrange.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, July 11, 2012, and all day Thursday, July 12, 2012, at the residence of Jerry Yoder, 7005 W. 650 N., Shipshewana. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2012, also at the residence of Jerry Yoder. Services will be conducted by Bishop David Schwartz and home ministers of Old Order Amish Church. Burial will be in Scott-Seybert Cemetery, Shipshewana.

VENICE, Fla. - Clara Schmucker, 74, Venice, formerly of Indiana, died March 15, 2012.
Survivors include her daughter, Teresa Yoder of Linden, Tenn.; and brothers and sisters Frieda Stutzman of Nappanee, Ind., Homer of Milford, Ind., Raymond of McClure, Pa., Esther Miller of Millersburg, Ind., Oscar Jr. of Nappanee, Velma Miller of Howe, Ind., Vera Yoder of Nappanee, Lamar of Syracuse, Ind., and Gary of Nappanee.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at Pinecraft Amish Church in Sarasota. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pinecraft Amish Church with burial to follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Sarasota.

NAPPANEE - Mary Etta Schmucker, 75, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2012.
She was born April 22, 1937, to Enos M. and Maude A. (Slabach) Eash. She married Marvin E. Schmucker on Oct. 16, 1969. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2009.
Surviving are sons Glen of Nappanee and Eddie and Lamar, both of Bremen; daughters Coleen Yoder of Shipshewana and Roseanna Troyer of Bremen; stepdaughters Kathryn Slabaugh of New Paris, Virginia Miller and Julia Miller, both of Milford, and Laura Miller of Nappanee; 24 grandchildren; 22 stepgrandchildren, 11 great-stepgrandchildren; brother Wilbur Eash of Purdin, Mo.; and sisters Rosa Ellen Zook of Sarasota, Fla., PollyAnna Otto of LaGrange and Sarah Jean Chupp of Bremen.

Palmer Schrag died 01/12/12
We celebrate the life of Palmer Schrag, who was born Dec. 2, 1918 east of Freeman, S.D., to John M. and Maria (Graber) Schrag, and was the youngest of ten siblings. His elementary education was in the one- room rural schoolhouse of Schlosser District #15, after which he attended Freeman High School, graduating with the class of 1936. After obtaining a one-year normal certificate from Freeman Junior College, Palmer attended Grand Island Business College in Grand Island, Neb., from 1937 to 1941.
Following graduation, Palmer began work in the Information and Recruiting Division of the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C.
After World War II broke out, he was called to service in the 5th Air Force (1st Radio Squadron). In the Pacific theater, Palmer's duties included radio intelligence and enemy air surveillance in the interception and cryptography of Japanese communications.
Returning to Freeman, Palmer's first post-war job was as office manager at Park Lane Feeds for 11 years. During that time, he also began work with the U.S. Post Office, where he was a clerk for 28 years before retiring in 1979. Subsequently, Palmer was Freeman's municipal finance officer from 1980 to 1989.
He married Marjorie (Sawtelle) Kaufman on Oct. 18, 1956, immediately becoming a father to her seven- and five-year-old daughters Crystal and Cindy.
The family welcomed a son, Richard, in 1958. Marge and Palmer celebrated their golden anniversary in 2006.
A life-long member of Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, Palmer was baptized Oct. 23, 1934 by Rev. A.P. Waltner. At various times Palmer served as mission treasurer, usher, and moderator, and was building fund treasurer for the new church building. He was accompanist for the Men's Chorus for 30 years.
Palmer passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at the Freeman Medical Center at the age of 93.
Cherishing his memory and mourning his passing are his wife, Marge; his daughter Crystal (Larry) Underwood of Goshen, IN; their children Teresa (Todd) Miller of Lyndhurst, Ohio; Mark Underwood of San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Christina Underwood of Elkhart, Ind.; his daughter Cindy (Tom) Zeiser of Buffalo, Wyo; her children Jeremy (Elizabeth) Thies of Duvall, Wash.; Jennifer Thies (Ryan Lutz) of Wheatridge, Colo.; and Joshua Thies (Trudy Proctor) of Westminster, Colo.; his son Richard (Roxanne) Schrag of Dallas, Texas and their sons Steven and Michael; great-grandchildren Austin Underwood; Natasha Thies and Felix Lutz; Jacob Underwood; Iris and Nadia Miller; Lillian, Isabel, and James Thies; sister-in-law Verda Schrag; and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his nine brothers and sisters, several of his nieces and nephews and his grandchild Tim Underwood.

MIDDLEBURY - Clifford D. Schrock, 67, died at 6:14 p.m. Wednesday, at home.
He was born Jan. 28, 1945, to David and Anna Ruth (Bontrager) Schrock in Goshen.
He married Norma Kropf on April 4, 1965, in Middlebury.
Surviving are his wife; children Carlene (Randy) Miller of Middlebury, Diane (Anthony) Miller of Paw Paw, Mich., and Daryl (Tracey) Schrock of Hilliard, Ohio; grandchildren Hannah (Tyler) Smith, Ben, Jordan, Ashley, Taylor, Sarah, Brandon and Rachel Miller; father David (Viola) Schrock of Middlebury; siblings Judy (Darold) Beachy of Mount Gilead, Ohio, Steve Schrock of Middlebury, Velma (Sheldon) Swartz, Carolyn Schrock-Shenk and Shirley (Jim) Troyer, all of Goshen; and sister-in-law Rhonda Schrock of Middlebury.
His mother and brother, Larry D. Schrock, preceded him.
Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. today, July 20, at Miller Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Saturday, July 21, at Griner Mennonite Church.
Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, Goshen.

NEW PARIS - Erie Schrock, 83, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at IU Health Goshen Hospital.
He was born Sept. 1, 1929, in Goshen to Menno and Elizabeth (Lambright) Schrock. He was a resident of New Paris for 62 years. Erie married the love of his life, L. Pauline (Herschberger), on April 1, 1950. She survives.
Also surviving are five children, Omer (Treva) of New Paris, Linda (Mark) Martin of Nappanee, Donna (Alan) Jones of Shipshewana, John (Judy) of New Paris and Elsie (Dale) Swartzentruber of Nappanee; one daughter-in-law, Barb Schrock of Goshen; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude Miller of Macon, Miss.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dale; a daughter, Rita; his parents; two brothers, Alvin and Melvin; and a sister, Rosa Bontrager.
Erie was a lifelong farmer and well-known poultry and egg producer, and an active member of Pleasant Grove Mennonite Church.
Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation, where the body will lay in repose, from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 6, 2012, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at Pleasant Grove Mennonite Church, C.R. 38, Millersburg.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at the church, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery.

ELKHART - Mary Schrock, 82, formerly of Goshen, died Wednesday morning at Valley View Health Care Center, where she had been a resident for three years.
She was born Nov. 7, 1929, in Middlebury to the late Enos and Mattie (Yoder) Cross. She married Jonas D. Schrock on Nov. 25, 1948, in Arthur, Ill. He preceded her in death on March 18, 2011.
She is survived by five children, Maxine J. Kurt of Sandy, Utah, Virginia J. (David) Forgey of Elkhart, Kerm G. (Joan) Schrock of Goshen, Ken G. Schrock of Elkhart and Karl G. Schrock of Goshen; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; six siblings, Anna (Irvin) Yoder of Goshen, Rosa (Calvin) Borntrager of Middlebury, Vernon (Arlene) Cross of Goshen, Elmer Cross of Cromwell, Leroy (Esther) Cross of Goshen and Joe (Alpha) Cross of Goshen; and two sisters-in-law, Verna Cross of Middlebury and Beulah Cross of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Fannie Mae Cross; and two brothers, Daniel and George Cross.
A homemaker and longtime area resident, she was a member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church for more than 40 years and an associate member of Wycliffe Bible Translators. She enjoyed quilting and gardening.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Thursday funeral service at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church, Goshen. Pastor Terry Diener will officiate.
Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery, Goshen.

Schrock, Mary Cross, 83, of Elkhart, Elkhart Co., IN died March 7, 2012 at the same place. She was born November 7, 1929 at Middlebury, Elkhart Co., IN to Enos and Mattie (Yoder) Cross. Mary was born Sept. 17, 1919, to William L. and Mattie (Yoder) Bontrager in LaGrange County.
She married Levi J. Schrock Dec. 22, 1942, in Shipshewana. He died in 2002.
Children Lydiann (Edwin) Kuhns of Nappanee, Ella (David) Bontrager of Bloomington, Wis., Mattie Miller, Wilma Beechy, Willie (Millie), Ora (Mary) and Samuel (Martha), all of LaGrange, Alvin (Katie) of Middlebury, Jacob (Ramah) of Topeka and Elmer (Wilma) of Shipshewana; 87 grandchildren; 276 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; siblings Ida (Elmer) Bontrager and Mattie (Chriss) Graber of Missouri, Amelia Stutzman, Emma (Marvin) Schmucker and Abe (Anna) Bontrager, all of Wisconsin, Susie Lambright of Orleans, Ind., Levi Bontrager of Shipshewana and Ezra (Clara) Bontrager of Wolcottville, Ind. survive.

TOPKEA - Nettie L. Schrock, 85, of Topeka, died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at Parkview LaGrange Hospital.
She was born Oct. 11, 1926, in LaGrange County to Levi and Lydia Ann (Miller) Miller. On Oct. 7, 1948, in LaGrange County, she married Jacob E. Schrock. He died April 17, 2008.
Surviving are sons Jacob Jr. (Esther) Schrock of Shipshewana and Ora J. (Alma) Schrock of Topeka; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and siblings Susie (Daniel) Bontrager of Topeka, Lizzie (Ray) Hershberger of Goshen and Ora L. (Ella) Miller of Topeka.
She was preceded in death by siblings Perry L. Miller and Sarah L. Miller.
She was a member of Old Order Amish Church.
Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, Aug. 22, 2012, and all day Thursday, August 23, 2012, at the Ora J. Schrock residence, 617 North Main St., Topeka. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, also at the Ora Schrock residence. Services will be conducted by Bishop Ernie E. Bontrager and home ministers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Mary (Schlabach) Schrock, three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by two sisters, Ella Yoder of LaGrange, Indiana and Fannie Lambright of Topeka, Indiana, and one brother, Ammon of Sarasota, Florida.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their five children, Norman (Kathleen) Schrock of Patriot, Ohio, Ruth (Jonas) Stoltzfus of Millington, Maryland, Marvin (Hannah) Schrock of Cambridge, Ohio, Martha (Ben) Surrency of Jesup, Georgia, Carolyn (Jason) Miller of Cambridge, Ohio. They have 12 grandchildren and 11 living great-grandchildren. Tyler Miller, a great-grandson, preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Valley View Mennonite Church, Patriot, Ohio. In his "retired" years he was a sales person at Schrock's Home Furnishings, Rio Grande, Ohio.
The visitation and funeral will be at Faith Baptist Church, Rodney, Ohio. The visitation will be on Tuesday, May 15, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 16 at 10 a.m. He will be buried at Valley View Mennonite Church, Patriot, Ohio.

Hoover of Ephrata, PA, a son Leroy M. Born in Martindale, on May 5, 1953, he was the son of Erwin S., Sr. and Mabel Zimmerman Sensenig of Stevens. He was a member of Lebanon Valley Bible Church. James worked as a machine mechanic for Zimmermans Manufacturing.

Retired in 1976, Lester worked in various administrative positions at Eastern Mennonite University for 31 years. He spent four years in Zambia, Africa, under the Mennonite Central Committee, and served on missions in Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Lester received his master's degree from Boston University and he was a charter member of Park View Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg. He also served on many church boards and committees throughout his life. His interests included gardening, playing the piano and caning chairs. He loved the outdoors, especially going to the mountains. Lester also enjoyed traveling and camping throughout 49 of the 50 states.
Surviving is a son, Norman E., husband of Luci Mumaw Shank, of Mechanicsburg; four daughters, Esther, wife of Jonathan Bucher, of Morinville, Alberta, Canada, Mary, wife of Ernest Swartz, of Portland, Ore., Miriam, wife of Jesus Cruz of Lancaster, Ruthi, wife of Kenneth Blackman, of Roanoke; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachael Cruz; two brothers, Earl and Paul Shank, and a sister, Gladys Shank.

GOSHEN - C. Kathryn "Kate" Yoder Shantz, 95, of Goshen, peacefully passed away to her heavenly home Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at Greencroft Healthcare.
She was born Nov. 5, 1916, to Elmer L. and Bertha F. (Yoder) Yoder in West Liberty, Ohio. In 1985, she married Stanley Shantz of Waterloo, Ontario. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Kathryn is survived by her sister, M. Pauline Yoder of Goshen; nephew John Wesley (Sherry) Yoder of Bejing; and stepchildren Calvin (Helen) Shantz of Edmonton, Alberta, Nelson (Ruth) Shantz of Ann Arbor, Mich., Elinor (Don) Gingerich of Elmira, Ontario, and Melvin (Karen Amos) Shantz of Winnipeg, Quebec. Kathryn also is survived by nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents and brothers, Willis R. and Winfred Lee.
Kathryn graduated from Goshen College and Ball State University. She taught for 19 years in Ohio before coming to Elkhart County, where she taught for 20 years at Model School in Goshen and Ulery, Rice and Hawthorne schools in Elkhart.
Kathryn's life revolved around church and mission work as reflected in her voluntary service, teaching Sunday school and summer Bible school, Bible study, prayer life, and daily trusting in the Lord. She saw the needs of others and quietly met them. She was also an accomplished seamstress and gardener.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2012, at College Mennonite Church. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Pastor Pamela Yoder will officiate.
Cremation has taken place. Half of Kathryn's ashes will be scattered in College Mennonite Church's memorial garden and half will be returned to Ontario to be buried with her husband.

GOSHEN - Kathryn Sherer, a pianist who instructed hundreds of students and together with her violinist husband performed around the world, died at home on Feb. 28, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. The cause of death was pulmonary fibrosis.
The musical collaboration of Kathryn, and her husband, Lon, began nearly 60 years ago in a theory class at Michigan State University, where they met. The relationship blossomed when he needed an accompanist for the Mendelssohn violin concerto.
Their romance had more than the usual degree of chance. Kathryn had transferred from Goshen College to Michigan State as a junior for what she knew would be only one year of piano study.
She had pledged to begin and end her college studies at Goshen, where her mother had graduated in 1928. Kathryn graduated from Goshen College in 1954.
Soon after their marriage, in 1954, the Sherers left for their first shared assignment at Woodstock School in Mussoorie, India. From 1956 to 1959 they taught at Woodstock and performed across India.
They returned to the United States in 1959, joining the faculty at Goshen College, which is owned by the Mennonite Church. They timed their arrival with an emerging openness in the church to instrumental music.
Their musical tours took them across the United States and to Central and South America, the Caribbean Islands and Japan.
During the course of her six decades as a piano teacher she instructed students at all levels and, together with John T. O'Brien, launched the piano pedagogy program and the annual piano workshop at Goshen College.
"As long as I can remember there were students in the living room taking their lessons from my mother," said her son Michael Sherer, director of information technology systems at Goshen College.
Although Kathryn retired from the college preparatory program several years ago, she continued to teach students in her home, well into 2011.
Kathryn Loraine Summers Sherer was born to Raymond and Edna Cook Summers in Lansing, Mich., in 1932. Recognizing her early love for music, Kathryn's parents drove her to group and private lessons in Lansing through grade school and then switched to a professor at Michigan State for more advanced training.
Kathryn earned a master's degree in piano performance at Southern Methodist University in 1979. She also studied with the internationally renowned music educators Frances Clark, John Owings and George Sebök.
She is survived by her husband and their children, Mark (Rhonda) of Indianapolis, Karen (Duane) Stoltzfus of Goshen and Michael (Patsy) of Goshen; four granddaughters; and a brother, Robert (Edith) Summers of Iowa City.
A grandson died earlier.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at College Mennonite Church in Goshen. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at College Mennonite, with a luncheon following.
The family suggests that memorial gifts be sent to the Lon and Kathryn Sherer Preparatory Music Endowment Fund at Goshen College or the MCC-East Africa Fund for Hunger.
In a Christmas letter written two months ago she gave thanks: "For a life blessed with beauty - great music and good books. For the opportunity to see our four granddaughters grow up in this community. For the opportunity to have had a teaching job that I loved, and most of all, for 57 years of marriage to a wonderful husband and musician, doing the things we love to do together."

Sherer, Kathryn Loraine Summers, 79, of Goshen, Elkhart Co., IN died February 28, 2012 at the same place. She was born July 14, 1932 at Lansing, Michigan to Raymond and Edna (Cook) Summers. On September 11, 1954 she was married to Lon Sherer, who survives.
Surviving are children, Mark (Rhonda), Karen (Duane) Stoltzfus, and Michael (Patsy), four grandchildren, and a brother, Robert Summers.
A grandson, Nicholas Dale Stoltzfus preceded her in death.

GOSHEN - Enos Huber Shirk, 74, died unexpectedly at his home Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012.
He was born May 20, 1937, in East Earl, Pa., to John and Mary (Huber) Shirk. He married Erma Jeanne Mellinger Jan. 1, 1960, in Lancaster, Pa. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Juanita (Monroe) Weber-Shirk of Ithaca, N.Y., Jeanne (William) Sahawneh of Hoover, Ala., and Jacalyn Shirk Lee of Luray, Va.; a son, Steven (Cheryl) Hochstetler Shirk of Goshen; 11 grandchildren; three brothers and a sister.

GOSHEN - Grace S. Shirk, 89, of rural Goshen, died at the home of her daughter, after many years of struggle with dementia, on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012.
She was born Nov. 19, 1922, to Joseph E. and Mary (Shaum) Martin near Wakarusa. On Jan. 1, 1944, she was united in marriage with Ben M. Shirk by her father, Bishop Joseph E. Martin.
She is survived by five sons and five daughters, Bertha (Melvin) Zimmerman of Decker, Mich., Anna Mary (Roy) Zimmerman of Goshen (with whom she resided), Ben W. (Rosemary) Shirk of Goshen, John Shirk of Decker, Paul (Vada) Shirk of Macon, Miss., Reba (the late Weldon) Zimmerman of Decker, Esther Mae (Donald) Martin of Decker, Kevin (Edith) Shirk of Brooksville, Miss., Ellen (Jerry) Martin of Sandusky, Mich., and Dana (Carol) Shirk of Cass City, Mich. Also surviving are 51 living grandchildren; 133 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Namaan of Wakarusa, Allen of Goshen, Rufus of Nappanee and Ben of Timberville, Va.; four sisters, Edna (the late Clayton) Brubaker of Nappanee, Miriam (David) Hoover of Goshen, Rhoda (Leonard) Martin of Goshen and Suetta (James) Bechtel of Goshen; and two sisters-in-law, Katie Martin of Nappanee and Mary Martin of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dan and Jason; and six sisters, Barbara Brubacher, Susie Ramer, Ida Ramer, Emma Ramer, Bertha Martin and Ruth Brubaker.
Grace accepted Christ as her savior and lived a life devoted to the Lord and to her family. She always loved flowers, and small children were a delight to her even until the last months of her life.

Born in Farmersville, he was the son of the late Eli M. and Lizzie N. (Sauder) Shirk. He was a retired farmer and also worked for Rutt Custom Kitchens for 28 years. He was a member of the Weaverland Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters: Ada wife of the late Elam Reiff, Ephrata and Lena wife of Harry M. Burkholder, New Holland.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Minerva Shirk; four sisters: Emma Martin, Minnie Nolt, Annie Shirk, Lizzie Fox; and five brothers: Martin S., Eli S., Amos S., Daniel S., and Aaron S. Shirk.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 28, at 12:45 PM at his late home, with further services at 1:30 PM at the Weaverland Mennonite Church with Bishop Titus Martin officiating. GOSHEN - James E. Short died peacefully at home Sunday morning, March 4, 2012, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Jim was born the fourth of six children on April 15, 1950 in Wauseon, Ohio, to Elden and Erma (Holsopple) Short. He married Mary Jo Hartzler on June 8, 1974, at College Mennonite Church, Goshen.
She survives along with their children, Kelly (Matt) Muhonen of Pasadena, Calif., Brian of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Elisabeth "Libby" of Goshen; four brothers, Lee (Jan) of Archbold, Ohio, Richard and Robert (Sara), both of Wauseon, and Gene (Rebekah) of Goshen; and a sister, Darlene (Dick) Ramon of Amelia, Ohio.
Jim graduated from Goshen College in 1972 with a business degree and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1976. He worked in accounting for several area businesses until 1986, when he opened his own CPA practice.
Following his original illness in September 1987, Jim underwent numerous surgeries and faced many physical challenges over a period of 25 years. He learned to walk again and for years got up early in the morning to walk in the Cardiac Rehab program. Throughout it all, Jim remained his positive "incurable optimist" self.
Highlights of his life included SST in Nicaragua and later returning there with Mennonite Disaster Service. He also traveled to Europe, Puerto Rico and about 40 of the continental states and especially enjoyed the national parks. In recent months, he repeatedly said one of his greatest joys in life was being able to see his children grow into wonderful adults. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in the Gathering Room at College Mennonite Church.
A 3 p.m. Sunday memorial service will take place at College Mennonite Church, with Pastors Phil Waite and Pamela Yoder officiating.

Marjorie M. Short, age 94 years, of Archbold, passed away November 6, 2012, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold. She was born February 25, 1918 near Pettisville, Ohio to Daniel and Amanda (Wyse) Rupp. She married Oakley Short on September 17, 1938, and he preceded her in death on October 27, 1993. A lifelong resident of the Archbold area, she was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She loved to cook, garden, mow lawn and drive tractor. She was a member of Lockport Mennonite Church, rural Stryker.
She is survived by three children, Rex (Dorothy) Short of Archbold, Jane Burkholder of Bountiful, UT, and Jerry (Kathleen) Short of Tucson, AZ; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 6 step great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Eileen Rupp of Wauseon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Ernie Burkholder; brothers, Emerson, Ralph, Alfred, and Virgil Rupp; sisters, Alta Schantz, Edith Stubbins, Leora Bachman, and Doris Bachman.
Memorial services will be held on Friday at 11 AM at Lockport Mennonite Church with Pastor Steven Heatwole officiating. Interment will precede in the Lockport Cemetery. GOSHEN - Ruth Kathlene Shrock, 97, of Goshen, died at 6:05 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at Courtyard of Goshen, where she had been staying the past five weeks.
She was born Sept. 12, 1915, in Shelbyville to Niles P. and Lydia (Kropf) Yoder. On June 24, 1934, in Shipshewana she married John E. Shrock; he died Sept. 3, 1969.
Surviving are sons Paul (Lucille) Shrock and Marion (Diane) Shrock, both of Goshen, and Carl (Judy) Shrock of Middlebury; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Ruth Yoder of Port Richey, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rosetta Shrock; grandsons Frankie Shrock and Keith Wallace; sister Luella Lantz; and brothers Lawrence, Roy and Robert Yoder.
She was a homemaker and a member of Griner Mennonite Church, where she had been active in the sewing circle.

GOSHEN - Heidi Siemens-Rhodes, 38, died at her home Sunday evening, June 24, 2012, after living nine months knowing her diagnosis of metastatic melanoma.
She was born June 24, 1974, to Mark and Jan (Lautt) Siemens in Sacramento, Calif. She married Mitch Siemens-Rhodes Aug. 3, 1996, in Kalona, Iowa. He survives.
Also surviving are her three children, Theodore Kazuo, Adam Hae and Ira Khalil; mother Jan Siemens of Goshen; and brother Brad Siemens (Andrea Martin) of Portland, Ore.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Willa Esperanza, and her father, Mark Siemens.
Heidi spent the first three years of her life in Sacramento before moving to Jerusalem, where her parents worked for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) from 1977 to 1982. The family moved to Fresno, Calif., from 1982 to 1989 and to Bangkok, Thailand, from 1989 to 1992, where they worked again for MCC.
The 1992 valedictorian of International School Bangkok, Heidi studied at Goshen College, graduating in 1996 with majors in biology and secondary education and minors in French and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
She taught English in Japan from 1997 to 2000. From 2000 to 2002, she lived in Iowa, where she taught a semester at Iowa Mennonite School and taught English as a second language to adults in Iowa City.
The family moved to the Goshen area in 2002, and she studied at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary until graduating with a master of divinity degree in 2005. From 2006 to 2008, she worked part time at Goshen Public Library and wrote the Gather 'Round Sunday school curriculum for Brethren Press. From 2008 until her death, Heidi served as pastor at Assembly Mennonite Church, where she was ordained in 2011 and truly found her life's calling in a community that deeply cherished her. She also served on the Goshen Day Care Board for Walnut Hill Early Childhood Center.
Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2012, at Assembly Mennonite Church, 1201 S. 11th Street, Goshen, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Saturday, June 30, 2012, at College Mennonite Church. Siemens-Rhodes, Heidi Jill, 38, of Goshen, IN died June 24, 2012 at the same place from metastatic melanoma.
She was born June 24, 1974 at Sacramento, Calif. to Mark Stanley and Jan Doris (Lautt) Siemens. Mark was born July 24, 1946 and died March 8 2005. Jan was born June 23, 1945 and survives.

She was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Manson, Iowa, to the late Amos and Amelia (Egli) Martin. She married Paul T. Slabaugh on Dec. 28, 1933, in Manson. He died June 3, 2005.
Surviving are three sons, Phil (Rosalind) Slabaugh of Goshen, Don (Ruth) Slabaugh of Kalispell, Mont., and Steve (Alice) Slabaugh of Goshen; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond Martin of Lafayette.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Garber, and six siblings.
She was an avid quilter.

ORRVILLE, Ohio - May Kathryn Smucker, 93, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, under the care of hospice at Brenn-Field Nursing Center, Orrville, having moved there from OrrVilla's Maple Terrace in late December.
She was born Sept. 18, 1918, to David Rohrer and Emma Smucker Rohrer at their farm west of Orrville. She married Francis Wilson Smucker on March 22, 1941, at Oak Grove Mennonite Church, Smithville. She lived her entire life in Wayne County, except for two years at Goshen (Ind.) College and two years in Civilian Public Service.
May Rohrer graduated from Smithville High School at age 16. She received her teaching degree from Goshen College and returned to Wayne County at 18 to teach in the one-room country schoolhouse that she attended until eighth grade.
After her marriage to Francis, they moved to Creston, where they both taught elementary school until he was drafted for alternative service in World War II. May served as camp dietitian, overseeing the male draftee cooks in various camps where her husband was administrator in Galax, Va., Three Rivers, Calif. and Bangor, Maine.
Upon returning home, May and her husband bought a farm just north of Orrville from her parents. There, while raising their four children, she worked on the tractor, in the dairy and in the garden. They farmed together for 14 years. May and Francis both returned to teaching at North Street Elementary School, Orrville. She also studied for two months in London at Oxford University.
She was an active member of three Mennonite churches: Oak Grove, Pleasant Hill and Smithville. For many decades she taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school and Bible school superintendent.
May was secretary and typist for the Calvary Hour, as well as for the farm records, her husband's graduate school and various boards. They volunteered at OrrVilla and the Orrville YMCA, beautifying the grounds of both. May and Francis traveled through all 50 states, to many countries and to Europe and South America as delegates to Mennonite World Conference. They volunteered with Mennonite Central Committee in Costa Rica and Fresno, Calif.
She is survived by their four children, Patricia A. (Terry) MacGregor of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Jane L. (Marion) Beyeler of Orrville, Eber D. (Beckie) Rice-Smucker of Goshen and Vera M. (Dan) Shenk of Goshen; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Ella (Milton) Rohrer of Smithville, Virginia (Dale) Smucker of Westfield Center and Martha Smucker Anderson and brother-in-law "Andy" Anderson, both of Cuyahoga Falls.
May was preceded in death by her husband on June 22, 2005; brother Milton David Rohrer in 2002; and sister Martha (Floyd) Beyeler in 2000.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Smithville Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Todd Martin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery beside her husband of 64 years. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Auble Funeral Home, 512 East Oak St., Orrville, or for one hour prior to services at the church. Snyder, Dwane Monroe, 74 years, 10 months, 15 days, of Williamsburg, Iowa died August 6, 2012 at Iowa City, Iowa from COPD.
He was born September 21, 1937 in Johnson Co., Iowa to Andrew Grant and Dora Alice (Kempf) Snyder. Andrew was born March 29, 1912 and died June 17, 1966. Dora was born September 20, 1912 and died March 21, 1974.
On July 31, 1958 at Parnell Mennonite Church he was married to Annie Irene Schlabach, who was born August 26, 1939 and survives.
Surviving are children: Larry Leon Snyder, Bernice Marie Marner, Beverly Irene Helmuth, Earl Dean Snyder, and Neva Colleen Sperr; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a sister, Thelma Gragg.
A stillborn son; a grandson, Patrick Marner, died 1996; and a brother, Marvin Dean Snyder preceded him in death.

Dwane was born September 21, 1937 near Kalona, Iowa, to Andrew Grant and Dora Alice Kempf Snyder. He lived with his parents in Colorado Springs, Co. from age 8 to 17 years. Since that time he has lived in the Kalona, Parnell and Williamsburg communities. On July 31, 1958 he was united in marriage to Annie Irene Schlabach at the Parnell Mennonite Church.
Survived by his wife of 54 years, Annie Irene Snyder, five children Larry Leon Snyder and wife Valerie of Parnell, Bernice Marie Marner and husband Michael of Parnell, Beverly Irene Helmuth and husband Marcus of Sarasota, Florida, Earl Dean Snyder and wife Kimberly of Sarasota Florida and Neva Colleen Sperr and husband Randy of Garden Valley, Texas. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandsons and one sister Thelma Gragg of Williamsburg, IA.
Preceding Dwane in death were his parents, a still born son, one grandson, Patrick Marner and an infant brother, Marvin Dean Snyder.

Wayne C. Sommer
FOOSLAND - Wayne C. Sommer, 84, of Foosland, died at 10 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2012, at Heartland Health Care Center in Paxton.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 27, at the East Bend Mennonite Church in Fisher, with the Rev. Michael Dean officiating. Private burial will be in East Bend Memorial Gardens in Fisher. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at the church. Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sommer was born March 25, 1928, in Foosland, a son of Nelson and Ella Kauffmann Sommer. He married Joanne Reber on Jan. 28, 1950, in Fisher. She survives in Foosland.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael (Annette) Sommer of Foosland and Brad (Kathy) Sommer of Fort Wayne, Ind.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willis Sommer of Gibson City and Dean (Janice) Sommer of Foosland; and a sister, Maxine Collum of Alabaster, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Sommer was a lifelong farmer and was an active member of the East Bend Mennonite Church in Fisher. He enjoyed riding horses, giving sleigh rides, trail riding and providing carriage rides for weddings and parades.

On Sept. 4, 1960, he married Anna Gingerich. They enjoyed 51 years of married life together -- what a beautiful testimony to see them still holding hands as they went to sleep at night! God blessed them with four children. He was a member of Zion Conservative Mennonite Church, where he shared in fellowship with other believers, and served as deacon for 23 years. Dad will be greatly missed by his family. He was a very kind hearted, faithful husband and father, humbly living out what he believed. He was devoted to the Lord: I can still see him reading his Bible and on his knees praying -- even in recent years. His earnest prayer two weeks before his passing was, "O Lord, save my children." How wonderful to know that Dad is with Jesus and how we long for the day when we shall be reunited, to ever be with the Lord!
Surviving are his wife, Anna of Coshocton; a daughter, Naomi (Reuben) Hostetler of Coshocton, a daughter-in-law, Dorothy (Jonathan deceased) of Sugarcreek, sons, Conrad (Jennifer) of Dover and James (Mary Ann) of Berlin; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Clyde and Levi (Nora) of Sarasota, Fla.; sisters, Vera Overholt of Sarasota, Fla., Martha (Al) Gingerich of North Carolina, Magdalena Detweiler, Ruby (Aden) Miller and Rachel (Paul) Miller, all of Hartville.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan; a grandson, Dallas; a great-grandson, Joel Andrew I; his parents, John and Alta Sommers; a brother, George; and sisters, Edna and Anna Mae.

GOSHEN - Betty W. Springer, 95, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2012, at Emily's House, Waterford Crossing.
She was born Feb. 7, 1917, in Richmond, Va., to Henry S. and Mary Ann (Burkholder) Weber. She grew up near Lititz, Pa., and had lived in Goshen since 1951. She married Nelson P. Springer on Aug. 18, 1951. He died June 16, 2004.
A member of College Mennonite Church, she worked as a secretary at Eastern Mennonite College, Mennonite Central Committee and served as editor of the children's paper Beams of Light at Mennonite Publishing House (1946-1954). She later worked at Goshen General Hospital in the admitting department and the laboratory.
She was a volunteer leader for Campfire Girls and enjoyed welcoming international guests in her home.
After moving to Greencroft in 1989 she served in numerous volunteer capacities, including the promotion of recycling.
Surviving are four children, Ken of Kansas City, Mo., Beth (James Farrand) of Salem, Ore., Joe (Jo-Ann Brant) of Goshen and Tina (Peter Kenagy) of Albany, Ore.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a brother, Henry S. Weber of Lititz.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Eva Carper, Helen and Esther Weber; and two brothers, B. Franklin Weber and Levi B. Weber.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at College Mennonite Church.
Scattering will be at College Mennonite Church.

Mr. Stahl was born on March 27, 1930, in Juniata County, Pa., where he lived with his father and mother, Dewey and Mary Brubaker Stahl and his siblings, Omar, Anna, Jacob, Sarah and John, all of whom, except Omar, survive him. In 1941, they moved to Harrisonburg to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided by what was than Eastern Mennonite School and what is now Eastern Mennonite High School and Eastern Mennonite University.
On June 18, 1955, Milo and Viola Diener, of Wellman, Iowa, were married. In 1956, they moved to Harrisonburg, Va., where they became members at Lindale Mennonite Church. Milo and Viola have continued to be committed to, and loved by the congregation there for these many years.
Milo received his bachelor's degree from Eastern Mennonite College and his master's degree from Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. He went on to do doctoral work at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. Milo came back to Eastern Mennonite College to work as the director of learning resources. Upon leaving EMC, he and Viola spent 10 years working in Jamaica under the auspices of Mennonite Central Committee. When they again returned to Harrisonburg, Milo spent time and energy working in a variety of roles at Lindale Mennonite Church and also enjoying and working with Phi Delta Kappa. In addition, he and Viola continued their work as trained facilitators for Marriage Enrichment seminars. After Viola had a car accident in 2000, Milo became her primary caregiver until his health demanded that his energies be better spent on being her husband first and allowing others to be her caregivers.
A deeply spiritual man, Milo lived out his belief in his God by committing himself to nurturing wholeness and healing in a variety of arenas. As a young man, in 1963 he was blessed to be able to attend the March on Washington and to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s, "I Have a Dream" speech. Milo shared King's vision for active peace-making and as a husband and father; he was intentional about taking time to build his relationships with his wife and children. In his professional life he took very seriously the opportunities he had to be a mentor to the students who worked with him. In the last number of years, in addition to writing and publishing his memoirs, "Learning to Love People and Use Things," he also wrote and published "Shalom," a work that reflected his understanding of life's calling, meaning and purpose.
Many loved ones will mourn his passing and celebrate his life. These include the family members mentioned above and also his sons-in-law, John Stahl-Wert, Charles Eberly and David Cowardin; his daughter-in-law, Laura Pines Stahl; and his grandchildren, Julia and Zoe Stahl, Emma and Clara Stahl-Wert, Brenna and Genevieve Cowardin, Heidi, Hannah, Joshua and Ian Eberly.
Peg Engle will conduct a memorial service at Lindale Mennonite Church on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. Visitation will be at Lindale Mennonite Church on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 4:15 to 5 p.m. In addition, there will be a remembrance service at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community at Strite Auditorium on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 1:30 p.m.

GOSHEN - Milo D. Stalter, 97, died Friday morning, March 23, 2012, at the Gables at Greencroft.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1915, in Chenoa, Ill., to the late Daniel and Alice (Miller) Stalter. Mr. Stalter grew up in Flanagan, Ill. He later settled in Ohio, where he spent 41 years, and in 1988 he moved to Goshen.
On June 6, 1943, he married Lois M. Wingard in Johnstown, Penn. She preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 2003. In 2004 he married Mable Hawkins Reed. She preceded him in death in February 2006.
Mr. Stalter is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Gilbert) Gingerich of Parnell, Iowa, and Linda (Jim) Butti of Scottdale, Penn.; one sister, Virginia Kreider of Goshen; six grandchildren, Jon (Cindy) Gingerich, Stephen (Susanna Funk) Gingerich, Lori (Tony) Roetlin, Christina (Phil) Castrofilippo, Gail Butti and fiancé Doug Peterson, and Michael (Erin) Butti; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Carl Stalter; three sisters, Gladys Reedy, Ferne Yordy and Marjorie Summer; and four brothers, Irvin, Lloyd, Wilbert, and Orval Stalter.
Mr. Stalter was a member of East Goshen Mennonite Church and an associate member of Bethel Mennonite Church, Wadsworth, Ohio. During World War II, he spent five years in Civilian Public Service. A 1934 graduate of Flanagan High School in Illinois, Mr. Stalter attended Goshen College from 1939 to 1940. He also graduated from Akron School of Practical Nursing in 1963 and worked as a nurse for four years. Mr. Stalter worked as a carpenter and home builder for many years in Wadsworth.
Friends may call from 9:45 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the Meetinghouse at Greencroft Healthcare, Goshen, where an 11 a.m. funeral service will be held. Pastors Steve Slagel and Merle Hostetler of East Goshen Mennonite Church will officiate.

Grace Metzler Stauffer Teacher, Missionary, Mother and Grandmother
Grace M. Stauffer, 97, whose life touched many people in several countries, died on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Landis Homes Retirement Community, Lititz, PA. She remained a wise teacher, loving mother, grandmother and matriarch of her extended family to the very end.
She was born Grace Bucher Metzler on a farm in Manheim, PA, on November 8, 1914, to Harvey and Katie Metzler. After graduating from Lincoln School in Rapho Township, she attended high school and college at Eastern Mennonite School in Harrisonburg, VA. Following college, she taught school in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
She responded to a call from the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions in 1946 to go to Tanganyika, East Africa (now Tanzania) to start a school for missionary children. She opened Hilltop School at Bukiroba, Tanzania, which has continued operating for 66 years at several locations. Now named Rosslyn Academy, it is located in Nairobi, Kenya, serving several hundred students.
After teaching for several years, in 1949 she married Elam Stauffer, a pioneer Mennonite missionary to Tanzania and a bishop in the Tanganyika Mennonite Church. Throughout her life, she remained a member of Erisman Mennonite Church in Manheim.
In addition to her roles as wife and mother to their 3 boys, she helped open the Musoma Bookshop in Musoma, Tanzania, in 1960 and served as its first manager. In 1964, when Elam retired, the family returned to Lancaster County. She remained active in church life, traveling with Elam to various churches and maintaining a warm and supportive home for her family. When Elam died in 1980, she remained the strong supportive center and matriarch for her family.
She moved to Landis Homes in 1983 where she lived until her death. In 1984, she was invited to and attended the 50th anniversary of the Tanzanian Mennonite Church in Shirati, Tanzania. She described it as an honor to be invited and found it thrilling to be present at this celebration.
During her life, she touched the lives of many people in many roles and in many places. Her life was characterized by humility and service to others. She taught students on several continents ranging from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia to Bukiroba, Tanzania. She and Elam were counselors to many churches. And she meant the world to her immediate and extended family.
Surviving are three sons, Philip E. husband of Velma Denlinger Stauffer of West Chester, Ken E. husband of Carol Maurer Stauffer of Toms River, NJ, Bruce E. husband of Susan Warner Stauffer of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Craig, Corinne and Kyle Stauffer; a sister, Edna wife of Leonard Brunk of Lititz.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Esther Martin, Elta Harnish and Anna Shank.
A memorial service will be held at the Landis Homes Retirement Community in the WEST BETHANY CHAPEL, 1001 East Oregon Road, Lititz on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 2:00 PM. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Erisman Mennonite Cemetery. PORT TREVORTON - Paul Z. Stauffer, 85, of Port Trevorton, passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Sunbury Community Hospital, Sunbury. He was born June 16, 1926, in Ephrata, a son of the late Ammon W. and Barbara (Zimmerman) Stauffer. He was the husband of Louella S. Stauffer, who preceded him on Sept. 6, 2009.
He was a farmer for many years and a part-time carpenter in his younger days. Paul was a member of Stauffer Mennonite Church at Riverview, Liverpool.
He is survived by three daughters, Janice E. Stauffer, married to Marcus M., of Port Trevorton, Florence E. Stauffer, of Port Trevorton, and Yvonne M. Martin, wife of Warren S., of Ephrata; one son, Peter P. Stauffer, at home; nine stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Marvin Stauffer, husband of Elsie, of Elkhorn, Ky., David Stauffer, husband of Grace, and Ammon Stauffer, husband of Anna, all of Mechanicsville, Md.; three sisters, Amelia Wenger, wife of Noah, Anne Zimmerman, wife of Robert, all of Elkhorn, and Mabel Stauffer, wife of Irvin, of Carlisle; and many nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded by a son, James E. Stauffer; a stepgrandson; a brother, Monroe Stauffer; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and David Brubacher and Kathryn and Walter Martin.
The family will receive friends for the viewing from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the family home, 2445 Hoffer Road, Port Trevorton. Services will be held at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at the family home with further services at 9:30 in Stauffer Mennonite Church at Riverview, Old Trail Road and Oriental Road, Liverpool. She was born near Mount Eaton on March 7, 1995, to Elmer and Dorothy (Miller) Steiner and was a member of the County Line Mennonite Church.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by five sisters and five brothers, Elizabeth (Elmer) Weaver of Orleans, Mich., Doreen, Amos, Elaine, Silas, Simon, Arlene, Jason, Katrina and Jonathan, all of the home; a nephew, Kenneth; paternal grandparents, Elmer and Bertha Weaver, Dalton; and maternal grandparents, Andy and Sarah Mast, Shreve.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Paul Steiner; and maternal grandfather, Sam Miller.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the County Line Mennonite Church with the ministry of the church officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

DALTON -- Ruth E. Steiner, 79, Dalton, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2012 at her home following a brief illness.
She was born near Dalton on Aug. 6, 1932, to the late Enos and Sarah (Basinger) Steiner. She accepted Christ as her savior in her youth and was a member of the Chester Mennonite Church. She lived near Kidron all of her life and was a homemaker.
She is survived by a brother, Louis Steiner, Columbiana; a sister-in-law, Bertha (Steiner) Weaver, Dalton; 16 nephews and nieces; and many great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Steiner; an infant brother; and an infant sister.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the County Line Mennonite Church with the Chester Ministry officiating. Burial will be in the County Line Mennonite Church Cemetery. Verena was a long time member of the Kidron Mennonite Church where she was an active member. She also worked for many years at Kidron Town and County.

WAKARUSA - Bertha Lucile Stickel, 81, of Wakarusa, died at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at Miller's Merry Manor.
She was born July 18, 1931, to Paul K. and Dorothy E. (Newcomer) Martin in Elkhart County.
She married Arthur Lamar Stickel on June 7, 1953, in Wakarusa.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur; children Debra (Rodney) Schmidt of Wakarusa and David Stickel of South Bend; siblings Lois Herr of Nappanee, Verda Jump and Roy (Carol) Martin, both of Goshen, and Thelma (David) Snyder of Wichita, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Madison Township Homemaker Club, a counselor at Camp Mack and volunteered at Madison School.
She was a member of Baugo Church of the Brethren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, 117 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa, and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Friday, Dec. 14, at Baugo Church of the Brethren.

ARCHBOLD - Mary L. Stuckey, 97, Archbold, died Friday morning, April 23, 2004, at the Fulton County Health Center in Wauseon. She had been a resident of the Fairlawn Complex in Archbold for about 13 years.
Born Nov. 14, 1906, near Archbold, she was the daughter of Anna (Short) and Peter J. Stuckey. A lifelong resident of the Archbold area, she worked at the former Fish's 5 & 10¢ Store, the former Helen's Dry Good Store, Lauber Manufacturing, and then for several years at The Barn Restaurant.
A member of the Lockport Mennonite Church of rural Stryker, she did volunteer work at the Tatter Club at Care & Share in Archbold and the Fulton County Health Center in Wauseon.
Surviving are a brother, Chauncey (and wife, Pearl) Stuckey of Archbold; two sisters-in-law, Sadie Stuckey of Archbold and Mrs. David (Ilva) Bontrager of Goshen, Ind.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Wayne and Orville Stuckey and an infant, Paul Stuckey; and a sister, Alta Nafziger.
Visitation will be Monday from 3-8 p.m. in the Fairlawn Chapel.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Lockport Mennonite Church with Pastors Charles Gautsche and Mark Miller to officiate. Interment will follow in the Lockport Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Fairlawn Haven, Mennonite Central Committee or the donorÕs favorite charity.

On June 8, 1951 at Freeman, SD she was married to Weldon Stucky, who was born March 11, 1928 and died June 16, 1999.
Surviving are children, Jerry (Carol Thornton) Stucky, Julie (DAvid) Moen, Kay (John) Shunk, Jodi (James) Baumgarn, and Brian (Linda) Stucky, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.
A grandchild, Shelly Stucky preceded her in death.

SHIPSHEWANA - David W. Stutzman, 71, of Shipshewana, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at home after a battle with cancer.
He was born March 27, 1940, in Revenna, Ohio. On Sept. 3, 1960, in Topeka, he married Donna L. Yoder. She survives.
Also surviving are daughters Virginia Stutzman of Nappanee, Beverly (John) Fleischauer of Lagrange, Paula (Ron) Quick of Shipshewana and Lisa (Jim) Taylor of Ligonier; son Lyle (Corina) Stutzman of Niles, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Suzzanne Stucky of Loveland, Colo., and Betty Jordon and Shirley Craft, both of Phoenix; and brothers Larry Stutzman and Dennis Stutzman, both of Oark, Ark., Devon Stutzman of Finley, Ohio, and Vernon Stutzman of Blue Springs, Mo.
His parents, Ray and Vada (Stutzman) Stutzman, and sister Sherry Weaver are deceased.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Emma Mennonite Church, Topeka. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. The Rev. Gene Hartman and the Rev. Derrick Ramer will preside. Burial will be in Shore Cemetery, Shipshewana.

MIDDLEBURY - Ezra W. Stutzman, 88, of Middelbury died at 7:15 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at Greencroft Health Care Center, Goshen.
He was born July 29, 1924, to the late John and Rachel (Schrock) Stutzman in Arthur, Ill.
He married Cora V. Marner Oct. 22, 1942, in Arthur. She died Jan. 27, 2002.
Surviving are his children, Fern (Henry) Yoder of Middlebury, Harold (Rose) Stutzman and Josephine (Jim) Miller, both of Goshen and Wilbur "Will" (Connie) and Gerald (Esther) Stutzman, both of Shipshewana; 12 grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.
He was a member of Forks Mennonite Church.

MIDDLEBURY - Ida C. Stutzman, 91, of Middlebury, died 10:06 p.m., Friday, May 25, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Haven, Kan., to Christian M. and Lydia C. (Miller) Miller. On Dec. 25, 1941, in Middlebury, she married Harry J. Stutzman. He died Aug. 9, 1992.
Ida's family includes six sons, four daughters, 43 grandchildren, 98 great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, May 27, and all day Monday, May 28, at the LaVern Miller Residence, 0075 S 1150 W, Middlebury. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at the same residence.
Services will be conducted by Bishop Daniel J. Yoder and the home ministers. Burial will be in Miller-Glick-Stutzman Cemetery, Middlebury. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury is assisting the family with arrangements.

GOSHEN - Luella Mae Summer, 102, died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 11, 2011, at Greencroft Healthcare.
She was born Dec. 26, 1909, in Manson, Iowa, to Chris and Barbara (Zehr) Summer.
She is survived by a sister, Ethel Summer of Goshen; a brother, Chris (Betty) Summer of Littleton, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Milo, Milton and Dan Summer.
A Goshen resident since 1962, Miss Summer worked at Goshen Case Company lining musical cases. She was a member of North Goshen Mennonite Church.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A 4 p.m. Saturday graveside will be conducted at Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Sunday at North Goshen Mennonite Church. Pastor June Alliman Yoder will officiate.

Summer, Luella Mae, 102, of Goshen, Indiana died January 11, 2012 at the same place. She was born December 26, 1909 at Manson, Iowa to Chris and Barbara (Zehr) Summer.
Surviving are a sister, Ethel Summer and a brother, Chris (Betty) Summer.
Three brothers, Milo Summer, Milton Summer, and Dan Summer preceded her in death.
Luella worked for the Case Co., sewing linings for the cases for musical instruments, mostly for the Conn Musical Instrument Company. She was a faithful member of North Goshen Mennonite Church even when unable to attend and her great longing was to go be with Jesus who had loved her so faithfully.
Memorial services were held January 15, 2012 at North Goshen Mennonite Church with burial in Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen, IN.

Eula Swartz died October 24, 2012 at the home of her daughter near Turner, Michigan. She had been living with Glenda and Elwin Knepp since she entered hospice care in March 2010.
Eula was born June 7, 1917 in Fairview, Michigan, the oldest child of Milton and Susie Stutesman Rogers. She and twelve other students were the first class to graduate from Fairview High School in 1935. A scholar, thinker, and writer all her life, she was valedictorian of her class. In 1936, she received a teaching certificate from County Normal, West Branch, Michigan, and for the next three years taught in one-room country schools.
Eula married Alvin Swartz on July 1, 1939, and moved to his home community in rural Turner. She delighted in being Mrs. Alvin Swartz. In 1946, Eula and Alvin, three children, and Alvin's sister, Clara Swartz, moved to Breathitt County, Kentucky. They lived there for fifteen life-changing years, establishing Turners Creek Mennonite Church, raising their six children, loving and being loved by their Kentucky friends and neighbors. The family moved back to Arenac County in 1961. For the next 43 years Eula lived at 2166 East Turner Road. She nurtured her children and grandchildren, assisted her husband in his ongoing church work, and involved herself in the life of Riverside Mennonite Church. She lived alone for ten years after Alvin's death in 1994.
In July 2004, at the persistent nudging of her brother Boyd, she moved back to her hometown of Fairview, into an apartment at AuSable Valley Community. For almost six years she cultivated new friendships, renewed earlier relationships, and joined the Sunday worship at Fairview Mennonite Church.
Eula has six children: Sherrill and Melvin Glick, Wakarusa, Indiana; Colleen and Mahlon Heatwole, Burton, Michigan; Glenda and Elwin Knepp, Turner, Michigan; Sue and Dennis Herr, Harrisonburg, Virginia; Philip and Darlene Swartz, Turner, Michigan; and Enid Swartz, Harrisonburg, Virginia. Her grandchildren are Mark and Marci Glick, Starla and Bob Martinez, Milton and Stacy Glick, Tom and Connie Heatwole, Jennifer Heatwole, Chad Knepp, Chris and Faith Knepp, Dana Herr, Holly Herr, Armanda Swartz, Michael and Starla Swartz, Vanessa and Evelio Torres, Angela Noia, Benjamin Swartz, Alissa Swartz, and Kyle Swartz. Great grandchildren are Matthew, Levi, and Rachel Glick; Caleb, Colin, and Caitlyn Glick; Hope Busha, Morgan and Tommy Heatwole, Nina Knepp and Casey Knepp; Gabriela, Simon, Alejandro, Brandon, and Onalee Torres; Giulia, Seth, Justine Noia, Brayden and Kayden Swartz. Eula leaves one brother, two sisters, and one sister-in-law: Boyd and Edith Rogers, Hilda Dahl, Jo and Oland Kauffman, and Patricia "Tish" Rogers.
Eula's husband Alvin, brother Ray Rogers, and brother-in-law Chris Dahl preceded her in death.
The funeral service for Eula will be on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Riverside Mennonite Church. The family will receive friends and condolences at the church Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 3:00-5:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM, and on Sunday at 1:00 PM. There will be a time of stories, songs, and prayer at 7:00 PM on Saturday. Eula will be buried in Sims-Whitney Cemetery, beside her much loved husband. Eula's life reflected her faith in Christ and her love of Christian fellowship. Contributions in her memory may be made to any of the three churches in which she was a member. Surviving are children, Dale (Pud) Swartzendruber of Wayland, IA; Arliss (Carol) Swartzendruber of Lakewood, CO; Margaret (Roy) Beikman of Gilbert, AZ; Kenneth (Audrey) Swartzendruber of Traverse City, MI; Duane (Sheri) Swartzendruber of Iowa City, IA; and Mary (David) Althaus of St. Louis, MO; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Merle Brenneman, and Dayle Brenneman, and 3 sisters, Lucine Morrison, Leta Mae Schneider, and Arlene Snyder.
One daughter, Lucille Brenneman, a daughter-in-law, Shirley Swartzendruber, 2 brothers, Marlin and Glenn Brenneman, and 2 sisters, Ollie Hershberger and Wilma Yoder preceded her in death.
Memorial services were held January 9, 2012 at Kalona Mennonite Church, Kalona, Iowa with burial in East Union Cemetery, Kalona, Iowa.

She was one of eight siblings, all of whom have predeceased her; brothers, Ray, Lloyd, Russell and Cecil; and sisters, Florence Maas, Gladys Hostetler and Nadine Hershberger.
She married Lloyd M. Yoder June 1, 1932. Seven years after the death of her husband, Lloyd, she married Harold Swartzendruber (deceased).
She is survived by daughters Beverly Burton and Bonnie Monatt (Norbert), son Gilbert Yoder, grandchildren Barbara Spizzirri (Tony), Marc Monatt (Michelle), Karin Pelletier (Bradford), Holly Bakanowski (Paul), and 5 great grandchildren (Lindsay, Adrienne, Heather, Bradford Jr., and Erik).
A Celebration of Life was July 14, 2012 at Pikes Peak Towers Penthouse, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Graveside services were October 4, 2012 at the Sharon Hill Cemetery, Kalona, Iowa.
